Map & Navigation

The Map tab is your daily workspace: basemaps, the tools drawer, and live GPS status.

This section is a work in progress.

A survey recording: the title bar shows the survey name, elapsed time, points and distance; the track trails behind the position marker.

Satellite Status (long-press the accuracy chip): satellites in view per constellation, signal strength, HDOP/VDOP/PDOP.

Measuring distance and area

Tap Measure in the tools drawer (under GPS) and pick Distance or Area from the flyout beside it. Then tap the map to place points: each segment shows its length at its midpoint (the labels stay upright however the map is turned), and a bold pill shows the running total at the last point or, for an area, the area with its perimeter beneath at the centre of the shape. Very short segments hide their label when you zoom out; the total never hides.

For precise points, use the crosshair at the map centre (pan the map, tap +), or tap the GPS button to add your averaged position. Vertices are handles: hold and drag one (a loupe shows the spot under your finger), drag the small circle on an edge to insert a vertex there, double-tap a vertex to remove it.

While measuring the drawer shows +, GPS, Undo, Clear and Done. Measurements are not saved — Done clears them. To keep a length or an area, capture it as a Line or Polygon feature instead. Units follow Settings › Unit System and adapt to the size: metres and kilometres or hectares and square kilometres, feet and miles or acres and square miles.

Map orientation: the compass button

The compass in the GPS bar has three modes. Tap it to cycle, or long-press to pick one:

Free rotation (outlined compass) — rotate the map with two fingers. The compass turns with the map, so it always shows where north is.
North-up (filled teal compass) — the map snaps to north and stays there; the rotate gesture is off, panning still works.
Follow direction (amber arrow) — the map turns to face the way you are moving (or the way the phone points when you stand still) and follows your position. Drag the map to take control back; it drops to Free rotation where you left it.

The GPS bar

From left to right: the GPS status (tap to show or hide coordinates), the Destinations flag with a count badge (tap for the list, long-press for the next target — see Destinations), then the track, compass and centre-on-me buttons and the accuracy chip. Long-press the accuracy chip for the satellite view.

Measuring an area: numbered vertex handles, a length on every edge, the area and perimeter pill at the centre, the cyan crosshair for precise points.

Measuring a distance: segment lengths along the line and the running total at the last point.
